Nei suoi disegni e murales della metropolitana, Haring ha esplorato temi di sfruttamento, sottomissione, abuso di droghe e crescenti paure dell’olocausto nucleare, che è diventato sempre più apocalittico dopo la sua diagnosi di AIDS. Insieme a Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf e Jenny Holzer, Haring è considerato una figura di spicco nella scena artistica dell’East Village di New York negli anni ’70 e ’80.

Bridging the gap between the art world and the street, Keith Haring rose to prominence in the early 1980s with his graffiti designs made in New York City’s subways and sidewalks. Combining cartoon charm with the raw energy of ART BRUT artists like Jean DuBuffet, Haring has developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic that focuses on fluid, bold contours against a dense, rhythmic spread of like that of children, dogs that bark, flying saucers, hearts and Mickey Mouse. In his subway drawings and murals, Haring explored themes of exploitation, submission, drug abuse, and growing fears of the nuclear holocaust, which became increasingly apocalyptic following his AIDS diagnosis. Along with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf and Jenny Holzer, Haring is considered a leading figure in New York’s East Village art scene in the 1970s and 1980s.
